Armstrong Group support Ricardo and Toyota in groundbreaking prototype Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Hilux project

Armstrong Group have played an instrumental part in the manufacture of newly designed parts for the Toyota Hilux Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric prototype Commercial Light Vehicle, produced in Toyota’s Manufacturing Plant in Derby.

From our 16,000 Sq meter manufacturing facility, Armstrong Group’s engineering team, worked alongside colleagues in fabrication, welding and brake press parts manufacturing, to support the production of these new components. This enabled Toyota to develop and assemble the new vehicle, which is the first of its kind in the UK. This project was delivered at a time that has seen Armstong Group establish a new composites manufacturing facility at Bayton Road.

Richard Lindoe, Group Managing Director of Armstrong Group, said –  “We are very proud to have been selected by Ricardo to support them in this exciting Prototype project with Toyota, here in the UK. The project was achieved in a tremendously challenging timeframe, with a genuine partnership from all parties.”

“Armstrong’s engineering team provided design feasibility with CAE with CAD model updates, material recommendations and manufacturing techniques, leading to the development of the fabricated steel structure. The fabrications were designed to interface with the updated vehicle platform and provide a secure housing and a simple installation of the Hydrogen fuel cell.”

“Our extensive experience in the Automotive Sector, along with our highly experienced craftspeople, supported by high technology automation and robotics, has been a perfect fit for this challenging project. Hilux is a global icon of the Toyota brand and sits well with the many other globally known brands we support”
